Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

Established in 1956 as a Bird Sanctuary and in 1981 as a National Park, the Keoladeo Ghana National Park or Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is situated between Agra and Jaipur, and falls in Rajasthan at about 4 hours drive from Delhi. The Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary has become a famous natural site for hosting a wide array of bird species like Siberian crane etc. from around the globe. The park boasts of around 380 rare species of birds in its 29 sq km stretch amid intense marshes, bogs, scrublands, grasslands and enormous trees. The trees here are exploited by birds for nesting, and even fetch it a distinct touch. The park remains opened throughout the year and offers the best seasons like the months of August-November for resident breeding birds and November-March for migrant birds.

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary has well-defined forest trails, which can easily be covered on foot or on a cycle or you can also hire a rickshaw that are available on hire. Rickshaw pullers have been trained by the park management in bird watching and are quite knowledgeable. Boats are also available on hire. An early morning boat trip or a late evening one is quite a rewarding experience to check out the hidden surprises of Bharatpur.

The park houses more than 300 species of birds. The major attractions of tourists visiting the park are the numerous migratory birds, which come from as far away as Siberia and Central Asia and spend their winters in Bharatpur, before returning to their breeding grounds. Migratory birds at Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary include, several species of Cranes, Pelicans, Geese, Ducks, Eagles, Hawks, Shanks, Stints, Wagtails, Warblers, Wheatears, Flycatchers, Buntings, Larks and Pipits, etc.

How to get there


Air: The nearest airport is in Agra, which is 56-kms from Bharatpur.

Rail: The Bharatpur railway station is 6-kms from the park and has well- connected regular rail services with all the major cities of India such as Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and Agra.

Road: An excellent network of roadway services connects Bharatpur to all the major cities of the Rajasthan and its neighbouring states like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana. Bharatpur is well connected by road from Agra (56-kms, 5 hours), Delhi (176-kms, 5 hours) and Jaipur (176-kms, 6 hours), all of which have airport facilities too.


Kanha National Park

Kanha National park, one of India’s finest tiger reserves is to be found in Banjar and Halon valleys in the Mandla districts of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The park stretches its limit to more than 940 sq km with an exceptional horse shoe shape. Visitors flock the park to revel in its diverse wildlife and natural good looks of its landscape. The striking Kanha National Park lured Rudyard Kipling to the extent to pen down the remarkable classic Jungle Book.

 Animals at Kanha are best observed from the elephant back and the open country makes the chance of sightings reasonably good. The visiting season to Kanha national park is within the months of April to June and November to January. The park is closed during the monsoon season that is from July to Mid-November.

The open grassy meadows here offer the rare sight of blackbuck, swamp deer, sambhar and chital. You can easily fulfil the long-craved and cherished dream to spot a live tiger wandering liberally in the wilderness of its natural habitat. This wonderful sight to see the tigers is quite common, and even can not be expected anywhere in entire India as regularly as in Kanha National Park.


Wildlife Attractions

Tiger, bison, gaur, sambhar, chital, jackal fox, porcupine, hyena, jungle cat, python, pea fowl, hare, barking deer, black deer, black buck, chousingha, nilgai, mouse deer, sloth bear, monkey, mongoose, tiger, and leopard are the animals that can be seen in the park.

Besides the large swathe of animals, the park is also famous for a wide range of birds and its species. Storks, spur fowl, partridges, quails, ring doves, spotted parakeets, green pigeons, rock pigeons, teals, pintails, pond herons, egrets,peacock, pea fowl, jungle fowl, cuckoos, papihas etc are just few of the available varieties of birds here.

How to get there

Air: Nagpur at 266-kms is the nearest Airport to visit Kanha National Park and is connected by various domestic airline services with Mumbai.

Rail: Jabalpur at 169-kms is the convenient rail head to visit Kanha.

Road: Kanha National Park is connected by road with Jabalpur 175-kms, Khajuraho 445-kms, Nagpur 266-kms, Mukki 25-kms, Raipur 219-kms. Within the park: Koshi - Kanha (9-kms), Kishi - Katia (4-kms), Kishi - Mukki (32-kms).
