Udaigiri Khandgiri - Tours Package India
The Udaigiri Khandgir stands as a residence for Jain monks. Udayagiri (Hill of the Sunrise) and Khandagiri (Broken Hill) clearly exhibit the asceticism and abstinence that were followed by the monks of that olden period. They are just on a 5 minutes drive from the capital city of Bhubaneswar in Andhra Pradesh.
With the respective height of 135 ft and 118 ft, both Udaygiri and Khandagiri caves give an account of the authority of Buddhism and Jainism in Orissa. These rocks cut caves came into being in 2nd century BC and delight for its astonishing carvings. The Rani Gumpha or the Queen’s Cave in Udaygiri is the biggest one and comprises intricate carvings. The Elephant Cave or the Hathi Gumpha with statues of elephants also creates a great concern for devotees.
Meditation was the main purposes of those rocky caves in Udaigiri Khandgir.
Akshay Ganga, Gupta Ganga, Shyam Kund and Radha Kund etc are some of the caves in Khandgir. The 24-Tirthankaras Cave with the carvings of the twenty-four Apostles of Jainism incites a great sense of curiosity for its being on the monolithic stones.
